The Wells Academy in Nottingham is proud to announce that it has been recognised for its exceptional work in improving student attendance, winning a prestigious Inclusive Attendance Award and being invited to share its approach with school leaders from across the region.
This recognition comes after a year of significant progress, with attendance rates improving by 4%, a remarkable achievement that places the academy among the stronger performing schools in the country for attendance.
Attendance is a national challenge, with schools across the country working to ensure students attend regularly. At The Wells Academy, attendance has been a top priority by setting high expectations and fostering a strong sense of belonging. The academy has worked closely with students and families to ensure that every child feels a valued member of the academy community.
Principal, George Coles, commented:
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our students, families and staff. At Wells, improving attendance has not been a standalone project, but a key element of a wider programme of academy improvement. Our work to strengthen behaviour, curriculum and teaching has created an environment where students feel safe, supported and motivated to be in school every day.”
Vice Principal, Natalie Aveyard (who leads on behaviour and attendance), added:
“Our approach to attendance is not about gimmicks or quick fixes. We don’t bribe students to come to school! Instead we focus on building a culture of belonging. Students want to come to school because they feel part of something meaningful. By working closely with families and fostering a supportive and ambitious atmosphere, we have created a culture where high attendance is the norm.”
The Wells Academy has been asked to share its successful approach with other schools in the region, demonstrating that a strong, student centred culture, rather than daily incentives, is the key to sustainable attendance improvement.
